History of Red Creek

The first family to settle in Red Creek was Jacob and Jemima Snyder and their 10 children. They came from Pennsylvania in 1813. Mr. Snyder built the first sawmill in 1814 and in 1816, built the first grist mill next to the creek flowing out the pond.

Our town was originally named Jacksonville in honor of General Jackson. In 1832, the Post Office came and renamed the town Red Creek. The name was derived from the color of the water in the stream flowing through the village which wound its course over iron ore beds at some point colored the water.

In 1852 the village was incorporated.
